The glue guns of silicone hot are handy. You can use them in repairs, crafts, electronics, assembly, installation…
This adhesive is not a real silicone, so some consider that the correct name is a hot melt glue. Whatever you call it, here’s a little guide to the best hot melt guns.
What is a hot glue gun for?
With this versatile gun, you can quickly and effectively glue various types of materials. For example, parts of the car interior etc. It is also useful for fixing electronic components, glueing materials on DIY tasks, school work, home fixing, etc.
Compared to other adhesives, including cold silicone, hot melt glue has the advantage that it dries very quickly. In a few seconds, the hot glue solidifies and leaves a strong bond.
Do you want to buy a hot glue gun? Here I show you some of what in my opinion are the best glue guns. Then you will find a small buying guide.
What is hot glue?
Hot glue or hot silicone is a slightly different type of adhesive than other adhesives. Unlike stick glue, cyanoacrylate, white carpenter’s glue, or contact cement, hot melt glue is solid when idle.
To apply hot silicone, you need a small power tool, the gun, which pushes the glue stick, melts it, and causes it to flow through the nozzle.
The gun has a small electrical resistance that heats up and melts the adhesive. Therefore, the gun needs electricity, and there are two types: connectable to the electrical network, or with batteries. On the other hand, in the industry, there is also a hot melt glue for spraying.
You can buy hot thermoplastic adhesive (HMA) bars in two diameters. The most common are 11mm thick bars and 7mm (thinner) bars. You will recognize them by their physical appearance that is between whitish and translucent. They are also hard and slightly flexible.
Advantages of hot glue
One of the advantages of hot melt glue is that it is easily removed, leaving little residue. In this sense, it is much more comfortable to use than other adhesives such as cyanoacrylate ( Loctite ) or contact glue ( Supergen ).
Also, hot silicone is very versatile, with it you can glue ceramics, plastic, metal, glass, cardboard, wood and some fabrics. It is instrumental in school crafts to glue marquetry boards, Eva rubber, felt, cardboard, rope, etc.
What are the best glue guns?
A typical problem with many inexpensive guns is glue dripping from the tip. The best glue guns are designed to prevent this from happening. It is achieved by stopping applying pressure when releasing the trigger or using a suction system.
Good quality conventional silicone guns use a similar system that automatically cuts off the silicone flow when you stop pressing.
On the other hand, some of the best guns include a ” bare-metal nozzle, without rubber protection.”
The cheap guns hotmelt can buy for about ten euros do their function, but the nozzle is filthy. It becomes loaded with glue and makes it challenging to apply the adhesive precisely. If you want to avoid this problem, I recommend buying a professional or semi-professional glue gun.
Before buying a thermal silicone gun, it must be clear that there are two stick sizes: 7 and 11 mm and they are not compatible with each other. The larger diameter ones are the most common. Thin silicone sticks can be useful for dispensing minimal amounts, plus 7mm guns are also suitable for applying sealing wax.
Hot melt glue applications
- Hot melt silicone can be used for a lot of things:
- Cable tie in electrical devices and machines
- Immobilization of electronic components to improve their mechanical resistance
- Fixing of plastic parts at home, in the car, etc.
For glueing EVA rubber sheets
It is also suitable for glueing wood, cardboard, paper, fabrics, cork, stone, glass and metal.
Hot melt glue is easy to remove by mechanical means but can also be softened and melted using a hot air gun to strip paint.
Types of nozzles
Below are three types of glue gun nozzles:
The first nozzle belongs to that of a cheap gun. It is the most common type of nozzle on these tools. The second is the long nozzle of the Bosch green range glue gun (semi-professional). The last one is the blue Bosch gun nozzle (professional).
The most comfortable nozzle of the three is the middle one as it allows precise application even in narrow gaps and tight spaces. The downside of this mouthpiece is that it can bend if it gets hit hard.
Whether the nozzle is more or less clean depends not only on its shape but also on whether the gun includes the glue recoil system. Bosch pistols do have this system. They barely leak compared to cheap pistols (just a drop now and then, it’s practically negligible).
Is it worth buying a semi-professional glue gun?
In most cases, yes, for two reasons. First, the price difference is not too significant (these pistols are relatively cheap tools) and second, the difference in quality compared to the most basic ones is very noticeable. Good guns don’t drip, they heat up earlier, they dispense adhesive more accurately, and their elongated nozzle makes it easy to access deep and tight spots. It will also last us much longer since the components are of better quality (the plastic parts of the cheaper Chinese brands, the push mechanism, and the electrical resistance, that is, the heating element, are of reasonably high quality. mediocre).
Other aspects of assessing before buying a silicone heat gun
In addition to everything already mentioned, there are other aspects that we must consider before buying a gun for hot glue:
Support arm: support bracket allows holding the pistol in a comfortable position more comfortably.
Battery: Battery-powered cordless guns are more convenient as they are cordless. We can also use them in places where there is no access to an electrical outlet.
Ergonomics of the housing: The shape and size of the glue gun are also important. Ideally, the tool allows a comfortable grip and precise application.
Electronic regulation: as already mentioned, the electronic regulation of the electrical resistance ensures a continuous and stable flow of glue
Power of the electrical resistance: the more watts the heating element has, the faster it will heat and the quicker the glue’s application.
